    bullet point  Fellowship Program

The Medical Toxicology Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh is unique because of the various clinical and academic opportunities available to the fellow. The fellowship lasts two years with an option to complete graduate level courses leading to the Masters of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree from the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH). The ACGME has recently approved the fully accredited medical toxicology fellowship for one fellowship position beginning in July 2007.

    Fellowship Description:

During the fellowship, the fellow will admit patients to the toxicology service (adult), provide consultations to other services (adult & pediatric), and participate in the medical toxicology outpatient clinic. Additional experiences include 1) providing consultation to the Pittsburgh Poison Control Center, 2) required course work (statistics & toxicology mechanism), and 3) participation in Hyperbaric Medicine (toxicology cases) and electives, as deemed necessary by the fellow and director (dialysis, psychiatric, pediatric, occupational medicine, etc.).

As an academic toxicology center, we expect the fellow to become involved with our faculty in their research. As the fellow gathers experience, he or she can develop their own ideas and projects with faculty supervision. Research may be in the basic or clinical areas, and seed money is available. Research facilities are available in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Currently we have four toxicology faculty members, which can only enhance the fellow's experience. Each has varied interests in the broad field of toxicology and encompasses basic and clinical aspects.

We are accepting applications from any applicant board-eligible in emergency medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics or occupational medicine. The first year 2007 medical toxicology fellow is Michael J. Lynch, MD. Dr. Lynch will officially complete his medical toxicology fellowship in June 2009.

The UPMC Medical Toxicology Service would like to welcome
Steven Walsh, MD and Michael Abesamis, MD who are the new Toxicology fellows and will be starting July of 2009.
